RULES

Rule Sets for Tackle and Flag Football regular seasons. As a member of IFAF, AFA make use of the IFAF rules.

For tackle/contact football the IFAF rules are used with some adjustments for our local competitions.

Enquiries about the rules can be send to info@americanfootball.org.au.

TACKLE FOOTBALL RULES

The IFAF rules for tackle football align closely with those from NCAA competitions (College Football) in the US. The IFAF rules include some differences to more accurately suit the competition level and facilities available outside of the US. The summary of differences is outlined at the start of the rulebook to provide ease of differentiation. Tackle football rules are updated annually by IFAF.

It is worth noting that NFL rules do vary from IFAF/NCAA and College Football games better represents the rule set we play here in Australia.

AFA produce our local rulebook for competitions in Australia and these are provided below for the standard 11v11 format and the 9v9 adjustment commonly used across the country.

For queries on suitable rulesets for smaller format games (e.g. 8v8, 7v7 or 5v5) please reach out to rules@ago.org.au

FLAG FOOTBALL RULES

AFA utilises the IFAF 5v5 non-contact flag football rules for competitions within Australia. The most current version of the IFAF rulebook is 2023 and can be found below.
